Shadow Child Rahna Reiko Rizzuto 9781538711453 Books
In an attempt to whitewash our history, this is part of what I wasn’t taught in school.I’ve read so many books about WW 2 but not much that covers what the US did to its Japanese American citizens.
This book covers so much while managing to be fascinating and never boring.
Woven into the history of our camps, the bombing of Hiroshima, settings in NY and Hawaii, is a mystery as well.
Don’t overlook this great book.

Shadow Child Rahna Reiko Rizzuto 9781538711453 Books Reviews
Great read
It was a very slow repetitive read...
I was interested in the story, however it just moved toooo slow
And anticlimactic ending.
I could never get into this book. It was a book club pick or I'm sure I would have never purchased it.
This book was very difficult to follow. The main characters have different names, the mother was never clearly understood and time jumps back and forth. It should be listed as a mystery because you’re never sure about scenes or characters.
This book deserves every five star rating it has gotten. I cannot even find words to describe how well this novel is done, it is fascinating. It was so refreshing to read a book that truly deserved its praise. So much more than historical fiction, it is a book that lives and breathes through every character. Truly amazing.
With beautiful, poetic language, Rizzuto creates a world full of mysteries as she follows the lives of three women who between them survive not only personal trauma but cultural devastation ranging from nuclear war, to imprisonment, to rejection by both one’s birth country and country of heritage. While the world of Shadow Child is filled with lush life, danger lurks everywhere, not only in global powers, but in apartment lobbies, outside unlatched windows and, most importantly, in the characters themselves. This is a powerful, deeply felt novel exploring the importance of understanding one’s personal, familial and cultural history.
The best way I can describe this book by Rahna Reiko Rizzuto is emotionally searing. It is profound, deeply moving and it will break your heart. That said, I also think this may very well be great literature.
Ingeniously plotted, this structurally complex book is essentially three, interlocking stories of three women told over three time periods. Lillie is haunted by demons unleashed when she narrowly misses being killed by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and she cannot help but impart some of those demons on her identical twin daughters, Hanako and Keiko. Once they were so melded into seemingly one being that the girls shared a nickname, Koko. Inevitably, their spirits separate—but in a cruel, monstrous and violent way. Can they ever regain their trust and love for one another? This is a book about the power of memory, the power of our personal stories and the power of love.
Here is an interesting dichotomy for the reader This book is so intense and emotionally charged, it is often difficult to keep reading, but at the same time, this haunting and engrossing story is told in such a captivating way that it's hard to stop reading. The book penetrated my heart, and I know I will be thinking about it for a long time to come.
