Four young men have noticed a peculiar man wandering around the streets downtown where they work, muttering to himself with a trashbag slung over his shoulder. After one of them hatches a plan to capture the strange old man's words, the group quickly realize that the fellow has seen and done things that defy the imagination.
A metaphysical tale of action and adventure that takes you beyond the bounds of normal human experience and into a world of secret colors and hidden doorways, of uncoiling panthers and recoiling nailguns, 'First There Wasn't, Then There Was' is a novella unlike any other.

I'd just finished Stephen King's Mr. Mercedes (highly recommended, too, by the way) and was looking for something new to read, and lo, I bought this. I follow Blackford on Twitter, and I've sampled some of his work, enough to gather that this guy is doing something different with his writing: he's writing what he wants to write, to heck with whether or not it fits squarely into whatever genre is popular at the time.Speaking of genres, this book doesn't really fit into one at all. Is it a crime thriller? Kinda. Is it a morality tale? Perhaps. Is there something supernatural going on? Possibly. To offer a very brief summary of the work, a group of young employees on a smoke break become curious about the babbles of a strange homeless man… and the real meat of this book is the story that this homeless man tells them.
After reading this, I can state the following with absolute certainty:
1) Blackford is a good writer. Per Stephen King, if you want to be a writer, you have to do two things: read a lot and write a lot. Blackford has obviously done his homework, and he writes with confidence, occasionally dropping some lines that are truly witty. The prose is smooth, and the work is decently proofed and edited.
2) First There Wasn't, Then There Was is a good story, and if you're contemplating whether or not independent electronic publishing is a good thing, this story, for many reasons, is a good argument that it is.
3) This work is really bizarre and thought-provoking, yet simple and straightforward enough that it's an enjoyable, lighthearted read.
If I were forced to point out a flaw, it would be this: the frame tale (about the smokers) could have been more developed; if I'd known more about the smokers, I think the book's ending would have packed a more potent emotional punch. The nature of a frame tale, though, is that it serve as a vehicle for the "real" story… and in that respect, it does its job.
If you're sick of reading stuff that reminds you of just about everything else you've read thus far, give this a shot. It's a pretty darn good breath of fresh air.

First There Wasn't Then There Was edition by Troy Blackford Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Whether it's his unique plots, developed characters, or creative writing styles, Troy Blackford's novellas are always sure to entertain. "First There Wasn't, Then There Was" takes you into the mind of a wandering bum who catches the attention of some young businessmen during their smoke-breaks. Why does he act like he does? Does his rambling speech actually tell a story? Surprisingly, yes. A story hard to believe. Do you?
Troy has an uncanny knack for taking the ordinary, the every day, the unsuspecting things in our lives, and turning them into the extraordinary, the bizarre, and the surreal in the most unexpected ways. His latest doesn't disappoint in any of these areas. Told in the form of a story within a story, he takes us on a strange odyssey with strange characters, with so many twists and turns the reader may need to buckle in for the ride. This may just be my new favorite Troy Blackford book.
Exceptional!!
The day this book came out I rushed home from work like crazy, not even caring to take off my coat and running straight to my to place my order. I don't regret this for a second! As excitedly as I have waited to read this book with a very promising and also mysterious title, it turned out to be a real pageturner wich I could definitely not put aside to go to bed. I had to know what it was all about..
Rarely I've read such originality in a story filled with mysterious and well developed characters. This book takes you in while you read it and makes every weird event as believeable as you read it. You'll never guess what happens next but this story is so well written it keeps amazing you.
I'm not going to tell anything about the story, because I don't want to spoil anything and I think everyone who is going to read 'First There Wasn't, Then There Was' needs to experience this magnificent story in his or her own way. This is surely one of my absolute favorites and I URGE people to pick up a book so wondrous it makes you think about it for days and days to come!
Troy, you are a true writing genius!!
The Lansburne Leaners are a group of four men who work for Lansburne-Bradley. They got their name because every day at 750a.m., 10a.m. and shortly after 3p.m., they go out and have a smoke and lean against the building. One day, they start noticing a homeless man walking each day muttering words they can’t understand. No matter what, they never can get the man to talk to them. Curious as to what the man is muttering, they devise a plan to record the man throughout the day. Once they get the recording device back, they never in their wildest dreams could imagine the story that was about to be unfold. In a clear and concise voice, the homeless man re-tales a story that will change how the group looks at the old man………and at life.
First There Wasn't, Then There Was takes the reader on an incredibly imaginative journey into one man’s mind as he coped with unimaginable terror. What started off as a story told by someone with a normal frame of mind at the beginning, quickly turned into a story told by someone who clearly had lost touch with reality in an effort to save himself from the horror that was taking place around him on that terrifying day back in 1980. Although you really can’t believe what you are reading at times, you can’t help but feel for the old man telling the story. The story within the story is truly amazing and really had something important to tell the four men who were engrossed by the man’s words. In the end, the tears started falling from my eyes and I just wanted to give the old man a hug. Mr. Blackford is an amazing story teller and although this story was short, it was packed full with emotion and action that one might find in a full-blown novel. Thank you Mr. Blackford for writing a well-written and thought-provoking story that will stay with me for quite some time.
